This walk sees us heading over to Hathersage and Stanage Edge, where the nearby North Lees Hall was the inspiration for Thornfield Hall, Mr Rochester’s home in Jane Eyre (the hall was actually occupied by a real Eyre family until the 17th century). I read it in a book, so it must be true. You don’t get on an ‘edge’ in the Peak District without a bit of a pull uphill, and the walk is about 9 miles in total. We should be rewarded with great views from the top though, over Kinder Scout, Mam Tor and the Derwent Valley. Afterwards we’ll get a slap-up meal in a pub. Definitely boots rather than trainers (but bring some to change into afterwards for the pub and ride home). And with the weather getting colder and more likely to rain, it’s strongly suggested that jeans are a bad idea. Wet cotton is heavy and loses heat. Regular walking can...
