The play focuses on Harry Wade (David Morrissey), England's second-best hangman, after the abolition of capital punishment in 1965. The critics have raved about The Hangman. "The funniest play in London right now," wrote Time Out, while The Daily Telegraph called it "the best new play of the year". "Gripping, funny and dramatically tense," was The Sunday Times' verdict, while The Independent said that it was "drop-dead hilarious".
