Manchester United legend Denis Irwin will join the festive fun this Christmas as he officially starts the Foundation’s ninth annual Santa Run on Sunday 13th December.

Denis will be on stage on the Old Trafford forecourt on at 11:30am where runners will gear up for the 5K Santa Run before he then sets off the 2K Family Fun Runners at 12:30pm.

Following in the footsteps of Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick, who were involved in previous Santa Runs, Denis spoke of his joy at being involved in the event this year, “I’m really looking forward to it, I hope there are lots of people who come along, from boys and girls to mums, dads and grandparents, it’s a fun day out, let’s just hope the weather is kind to us!”

He added, “The Foundation do a fantastic job around Greater Manchester going into schools and running projects at night for young people, so events like this are extremely important in raising as much money as possible. There are a lot of great charities fighting for money so this event will help us all.”

Runners of the 5K race will make their way down Sir Alex Ferguson Way before taking in the sights of the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry and MediaCityUK. The 2K Family Run takes a shorter route leading down United Road but runners will join up other Santa’s to make their way home to Old Trafford, making a players entrance into the stadium as they run down the tunnel and into the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

During the event a brass band will be on hand playing everyone’s favourite Christmas tunes and runners will be treated to a special performance by the Foundation’s Street Dance Crew. Youngsters can also head inside the stadium to get their faces painted before visiting Father Christmas himself in his grotto as he gives out some early Christmas presents.

The Santa Run is a charity event and participants are invited to raise money for the Foundation or any other charity of their choice.
